Spotlight on Scotland: the land that inspired Outlander

Outlander
Outlander is a series of seven novels, the eighth instalment,Written in My Own Heart's Blood  is now available.

Outlander Film Locations:
The indoor scenes are shot in a disused warehouse in Cumbernauld.
Midhope: Lallybroch
Blackness Castle, nr Bo'ness: Fort William HQ of Black Jack
Culross, Fife: the houses around the Mercat represents 1740's Crainsmuire
Falkland, Fife: 1940's Inverness.
The 1700's Highland crofting  scenes were filmed in the "Township," part of the Highland Folk Museum near Newtonmore.

Other locations include: Aberdour Castle (St. Anne de Beaupre's Monastery); 
Linlithgow Palace (prison entrance).
Doune Castle (Castle Leoch) near Stirling, previously seen in Monty Python and the Holy Grail and as Winterfell in the pilot of Game of Thrones.

Inverness: Visit the mysterious Clava Cairns (inspiration for Craig na Dun) and the nearby Culloden Battlefield to discover the history of the Jacobite Uprisings

Other films and their filming locations in Scotland

How do you fancy standing where Bond and M meet in "Skyfall" in Glen Etive, the film location  near Glencoe.  Or, perhaps you would like to see where Hagrid's hut stood in "Harry Potter" or see the sky where Quidditch was played, you could even take the train to Hogwarts.

With its dramatic scenery, expansive wilderness, and photogenic cities Scotland is the perfect location for filming. Listed below are the locations of some well known films, some of which may surprise you. This is your chance to visit some of these iconic locations.

Often Scotland is used to stand in for other countries: Glasgow's George Square doubled as Philadelphia in Brad Pitt's zombie film "World War Z." Only weeks later Halley Berry was in town with Glasgow standing in for San Francisco for her new film "Cloud Atlas." The city has also hosted Peter Mullan's film "Neds," the forthcoming "Perfect Sense"with Ewan McGregor and Eva Green, and "The Decoy Bride,"starring David Tennant.

Despite the film "The Descent," being set in the Appalachian Mountains much of it was filmed in Scotland. Glasgow was used for location filming "Fast & Furious 6" between late August and early September 2012.

Recent films

2019  1917  the former grayling docks near Clydebrae Street, Govan in Glasgow was used as the location of the bridge down across the canal where Lance Corporal Schofield comes under fire from a German sniper.

2014  Sunshine on Leithis the Scottish version of the feel good musical, with music by The Proclaimers. It will have you laughing and crying in equal measure. Filmed in, and showing Edinburgh off at its best. Many of the night and pub scenes were shot in Glasgow (cheaper drink, perhaps!).

2014 The Fairy Flag is based on a legend from the Isle of Skye and is being shot at Balgonie Castle in Glenrothes (the famous flag is held in Dunvegan Castle, home to the chief of the Clan Macleod on Skye).

June 2014 Belle: To coincide with the new film there is a special exibition of the only known painting of Dido Elizabeth Belle at Scone Palace, (pronounced Scoon) home to the present 8th Earl of Mansfield, William David Murray. This was the traditional coronation site of the kings of Scots and site of the "Stone of Destiny"

May 2015 Black Angel (1980) Short film shown in some cinemas before Starwars: The Empire Strikes Back and thought to have been lost. has been  rediscovered.  Film locations- Eilean Donan Castle, Kyle of Lochalsh and Glenelg.

July 2015 Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur filmed around the Bealach-na-Ba and Sheldaig, Wester Ross

Sept 2015, Macbeth (referred to by actors as "the Scottish Play")
A new film adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth has been filmed the Quirang, the Fairy Pools and Slighachan on Skye.
Michael Fassbender plays Macbeth with Marion Cotillard as Lady Macbeth and Paddy Considine as Banquo.

At the premier
July 2016 Trainspotting 2 Filmed at locations across Edinburgh: Princes St; Muirhouse; Craigmillar; Busy Bee Pub,Saughton; outside the Scottish Parliament and Picardie Place at the Omni Centre.

Aug/Sep 2016 Transporter: The last knight filmed on Skye

2017
Marvel blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War  shot in Glasgow in late February. Other scenes were shot in Edinburgh; St Abb's Head, Berwickshire;  and the Highlands. Avengers: Infinity War is a planned sequel to The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron. The film is the nineteenth main installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as the seventh in Phase Three.

The film, Churchill starring Brian Cox was filmed at Arniston House, Gorebridge, Midlothian. Other scenes were shot in George Street and John Street, Glasgow

The Wife, starring Glenn Close and Christian Slater is in post production. Scenes were shot in Dumfries and Glasgow.


Fort Augustus and Loch Ness

The new ITV series The Loch - uses the most iconic loch in Scotland, Loch Ness, together with town of Fort Augustus (fictional Lochnefoy) at its southern end. The lock system is part of the Caledonian Canal. Other locations include Fort William and Glencoe.
Can be visited on a Short Break tour with an overnight stay in Fort Augustus.

2018 Releases

Shooting is complete: Netflix, Outlaw King, about King Robert the Bruce, starring Chris Pine, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Florence Pugh.
